Bringing back some memories of our long lost summer, hack/flash welcomes local photographer Freya Gill to share some of her work. Enjoy!

Hey! I’m Freya; this is my fist dip into the world of HackFlash! I am 18 years old, and can be spotted around south Wales clutching my trustee canon snapping pretty much anything and everything! Aside from photography, I enjoy listening to, (and occasionally trying to play) music! To help feed my music hunger, I also love to help out with presenting the Radio Cardiff Saturday show, “Youth Beats”.

Back during August bank holiday, I thought that I would pop on over to the “Pill Carnival” in Newport. Each year the community of Pill club together to create a variety of interesting floats and processions, and each year the effort is golden. After recent arrival of my new telephoto lens, I deemed the carnival the perfect opportunity to put my new baby to the test!

This banner of flags represents all the cultures that merge into the melting pot that is Pill. I sort of felt sorry for the guy hauling it around, there was quite the breeze blowing!

This little Carnival princess seemed to have grown tired of the festivities by time her float had reached where I was stood. I suppose once you see one crowd of fans, you’ve seen them all…

Her name was Lola…. Pill made sure to bring a taste of “Notting hill” to their efforts…. Well… Ish.

And a pair of family favorites brought a touch of magic to the proceedings!

And so! After what I felt was an enjoyable day, it was quite nice to glance over the shot’s id managed to get that day. I was very impressed with my new Tamron 70-300mm lens too. So, it may not be as smooth as the canon, or even Sigma counterparts, for the money I think it was a fabulous buy, and it’s currently living in an old handbag, so it’s never far away from me, ahah. I think I should make an investment in a lens case next. May be a good idea. I do hope everyone enjoyed his or her bank holiday; it was a nice way to round off the summer break. And even if you aren’t affected by the holidays, just a great excuse for a day off!

Freya Gill is 18 and can usually be spotted around Newport or Cardiff taking photos of anything and everything that takes her fancy. Her favourite food is pesto and pasta, favourite movie is Bridget Jones, she’s finishing off her A-levels in 6th Form and she spends her Saturday mornings presenting YouthBeats on the fabulous Radio Cardiff.
